Projects - Economy - Training

We have a scholarship scheme to enable some young people from Dedza to undertake post-school training. Even the young people who manage to complete secondary schooling find it difficult to get a job because they do not have vocational or other employment related skills. There are only a small number of colleges in Malawi and very few government funded places to enable further study.

There is no college in Dedza but Salima Technical College, located at Senga Bay on the shore of Lake Malawi, is a few miles north of the district. The college offers courses in vocational subjects – carpentry, bricklaying, metal fabrication, motor mechanics – and accountancy and secretarial studies. It accepts fee paying students for courses of up to three years that are the equivalent of a City and Guilds and ACCA qualifications.

Our project both assists Salima College as well as the students. We provide the college library with redundant books from the library of City College Norwich. We also assist with staff training and are trying to help the development of new courses, such as boatbuilding.

In recognition of this help, the College provides a 50% discount on its fees. Our Partnership scholarship pays 25% of college fees, covers all exam fees and buys protective clothing. The students thus have to find only 25% of the normal fees through work, community contribution or other benefactors.

We seek donations from companies and individuals for this scheme. Further information is given in details. To make a donation, please complete the form.

We would also appreciate any help with the provision of tools that we can take to Malawi in luggage and visits by volunteers to carry out staff training and course development.
