Norwich-Dedza Partnership
The Norwich-Dedza Partnership is a charity that
develops and supports practical links between
Norwich, UK and Dedza District in central Malawi.
We believe there are mutual benefits from
collaboration leading to a greater appreciation
of the differences and similarities in ways of
life in the two areas. Projects so far have covered
IT, Health and Education. The Partnership welcomes
ideas for developing new or existing projects and
is grateful for contributions of time, materials
or money.

Gardians Shelter
Gardians Shelter
When patients stay at Dedza District Hospital, a relative accompanies them to cook
their food and wash clothes. These “guardians” stay in a hostel – the Guardians Shelter.
Five years ago we raised money to make some improvements such as a water supply and
electric light.
Further work is now needed to build a cesspit toilet, repair the clothes washing
facilities and reposition the covered cooking area. This will be the main aim of our
fundraising in the coming year. Information on giving donations can be found in the
How You Can Help section of this website.

Salima Scholarships
We have a scheme to provide scholarships for a limited number of
young people from Dedza to attend Salima Technical College. They take
courses in accountancy, secretarial studies, bricklaying, carpentry,
metal fabrication and motor mechanics. Students at Norwich City College
are helping to raise funds for this. We are also appealing to local
companies to donate a scholarship for a course related to their business.

Chongoni Rock Art
A cluster of rock art sites in the Chongoni Forest Reserve in Dedza have
been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Malawi Antiquities Dept is
building an information centre for this.
We are assisting by preparing the display boards for the centre. MA Museology
students at the UEA have researched information and prepared text and pictures
for the boards. Volunteers from staff of the Norfolk Museums Service and a graphic
designer, Jo Osborne, are helping with the design of the exhibition.
Funds for this project have been provided by the ACE Foundation (Association
for Cultural Exchange) in Cambridge and the John Jarrold Trust in Norwich.

School Links
School Links
17 schools in Norfolk are linked with schools in Dedza. They provided footballs,
netballs and other sports equipment, books, pens and pencils for their partner schools.
The materials were taken by visitors to Dedza this summer as part of their luggage.
The children also sent writing and drawings and the Dedza children sent back work that
described their lives and schools. A teacher from Bressingham Primary in Norfolk and
Chisiri School in Dedza also visited each other’s schools, using a grant from the
British Council.
