Norwich-Dedza Partnership - Salima College Scholarships
Finance and Administration of the Scheme
The cost of supporting a student varies, depending length of the course
and external exam fees. To simplify this we ask for £150 per year for three
years. However, any contribution to the scholarship fund would be gratefully
accepted. A student can be supported by more than one donor. Donations can
be made by an individual or company. Tax relief is available on donations as
we are a registered charity.
You can donate money into the general scholarship fund or support a
particular student and we will provide details of that person and information
on their progress. Companies can be provided with a certificate that could be
displayed in your offices to show your contribution.
All the money you give will be used for scholarships. Our organisation is
run by volunteers and we have very small administrative costs. Money is transferred
each term to the Dedza District Council in Malawi. We visit each year to check
on the scheme and obtain details of the students.
Administration and selection of successful applicants is carried out by the
Dedza District Social Welfare Dept. Applicants are from poor families and have
previously received bursaries for secondary school fees. They must have passed
the school leaving exam.
Accountancy - The course includes accountancy, business knowledge, communication
and maths and statistics. At present Salima College offers only the first year
Foundation Certificate course. The students also sit an external exam set by the
Public Accounts Examining Council of Malawi (an examination partner of the ACCA).
If students succeed in this and can find the means to continue at another college,
we will provide the same level of support for a further two years for study at
a higher level.
Secretarial Studies – This is a two year course. Subjects include typing,
bookkeeping and business studies. The students sit for an external City and Guilds
Pitman qualification through three levels up to Advanced Certificate.
Bricklaying, carpentry, metal fabrication, motor mechanics - The courses include
calculations, technical drawing, technology and entrepreneurship. Over three years
students can progress through three grades of the National Trade Test. The exams are
set by the Technical, Entrepreneurial, Vocational Education and Training Authority
(TEVETA) of Malawi, which is the equivalent of BTEC. We also buy the student’s overalls
and protective boots.
